St Crispin’s Hospital, Northampton

The former psychiatric hospital in Duston, west of Northampton, was acquired by Wilson Connolly with outline planning for some 400 executive homes. Chelgate was retained to promote a more mixed development using a collaborative planning approach. Our community engagement included a residents’ forum, architecture weekends and regular newsletters, and included a summer party when the revised application was consented. The project, which is still ongoing, included some 900 new homes, refurbishment of existing hospital buildings, a retirement village and hotel and conference centre. The project was commended by The Prince’s Trust as a demonstration of best practice in community engagement.
